Japan Ranks 3rd Globally In IT Access, Usage: Report
TOKYO (Nikkei)–Japan is third in the world when it comes to the availability and use of information technology, such as broadband connection and cellular phone services, according to a government report released Tuesday.

The Communications Ministry’s 2011 information and telecommunications white paper evaluated IT infrastructure development and ease of access, as well as the use of related services, in 30 major countries using data from international organizations and others.

Japan came in third overall, following South Korea and Sweden. In last year’s white paper, which covered 25 nations, Japan came in second after South Korea.

The 2011 report names Japan as tops in IT infrastructure development, partly due to the high proportion of people with access to fiber-optic networks. But the country stands in 12th place for the availability and usage of mobile phone, Internet and other communications services. In terms of service usage, Japanese businesses rank seventh, with individuals and government showing up at 12th and 23rd among the 30 countries, respectively.
